European Cycling Challenge – 2014

SmartCity Bærum and Bærum Municipality joined the ECC in 2014.
We invited citizens to participate to cycle instead of using car or other powered vehicles. The participants used Endomondo sportsApp to register their cycle journeys.
The competition last for 31 days, and at the end we got a heat map showing all the cycling routes. The municipality using the data to analyse strategic cycle routes in cycle planning.
About European Cycling Challenge
ECC is a urban cyclists team competition. It is a challenge among European cities: the City that “rides” the longest total distance wins! The competitions takes place every year from 1 to 31  of May.

The challenge is open to all people living in participating cities, or travelling to/from those cities for work, study or other reasons.

All journeys made by bicycle instead of other means of transportation (such as car, motorcycle or any engine powered vehicles) are accepted. As an example: journeys to and from workplace, school, to shopping, to go to the cinema, etc… are valid journeys. Sport activities are not accepted.

ECC used the sportsApp Endomondo to track the journeys, either by using a smartphone with an embedded GPS system, input manually data about your route on the the Endomondo website or import a .gpx file with your journey created with another GPS tracking system.

At the end of the competition the cities will get a heat map – with all the cycle route – anonymous of course.
